The Music Technology and Commercial Music program at the University of Central Missouri (UCM) offers a dynamic and flexible curriculum designed to prepare students for a wide range of careers in the contemporary music industry. The program encourages students to individualize their course of study to align with their artistic interests and professional aspirations, fostering both creative expression and technical proficiency.
Students can choose to focus on Jazz and Commercial music, receiving in-depth instruction in areas such as jazz performance and composition, and teaching across a diverse range of contemporary styles. The curriculum integrates theoretical study with applied practice, offering courses in jazz improvisation, arranging, composition, and the history of jazz and commercial music.
Performance is a central component of this focus. Students participate in ensembles such as the UCM Jazz Big Band Ensembles and the Jazz and Rock Combos, gaining valuable experience in both large and small group settings. These ensembles provide opportunities for artistic growth through performance, collaboration, and the study of significant works from the jazz and commercial music repertoire.
In addition to on-campus performances, students have the opportunity to perform at prestigious venues throughout the Kansas City area, including the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.
Instruction within the program is provided by UCM’s distinguished faculty, whose expertise spans performance, composition, music technology, and jazz studies. Students also benefit from the Artist Series Program, which features renowned guest artists who conduct masterclasses and clinics, providing students with valuable professional insights and experiences. Recent guest artists have included Adam Larson, Tamir Hendelman, Shawn Pelton, Rob Scheps, Jerry Dodgion, Jim O’Connor, Jason Jackson, Todd Strait, Kathy Kosins, and Roger Rosenberg.
Graduates of the Music Technology and Commercial Music program pursue careers as performers, composers, arrangers, producers, and educators in a diverse range of professional settings. Many alumni have continued their education in graduate jazz programs at leading institutions in the US. Others have established successful professional careers in both national and international contexts, contributing to the field as artists, teachers, and industry professionals.
Dear Band Directors,
My name is Dr. Carolina Calvache, and I’m the new Director of the 2026 UCM Jazz Festival. This year, we are excited to welcome many new and returning high school and middle school ensembles. Participating groups will receive constructive comments (recorded digitally and emailed to directors), rating sheets, and, as programming allows individual feedback time with our judges.
We are thrilled to feature trumpeter and composer Michael Rodriguez as our guest artist. Michael is an acclaimed member of both the San Francisco Jazz Collective and the Maria Schneider Orchestra, and he has performed and recorded with Chick Corea, Carla Bley, Charlie Haden, Kenny Barron, among many others.
The festival will run approximately 8:00 a.m.–6:30 p.m. and will include a concert featuring our guest artist with UCM’s jazz ensembles, a clinic presentation, and the individual awards and “I” rating plaque ceremony (see details below) at the end of the day.
Please note: The festival will continue to use a ratings-only format (non-competitive). All groups receiving a “I” rating will receive a trophy/plaque. Our goal is to make the festival a positive, educational, and inspiring experience for all participating students and directors.
