Fort Scott National Cemetery 900 E. National Ave. Fort Scott, KS 66701 Fort Scott was originally founded as a military base in 1842 and later abandoned in 1853. The original cemetery was located near the fort and interred 17 soldiers. After the military left, the cemetery became public. After the Civil War started, the Army returned to Fort Scott in 1862. Land was purchased for a bigger cemetery that year, and in 1867, the original 17 veterans were reinterred.
